Lee Byung Hun received a special TIFF Tribute Award at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) for his outstanding contributions to the development of cinema. The award was presented by renowned director Park Chan Wook, with whom Lee has been friends for 26 years.
In his speech, Park Chan Wook praised Lee Byung Hun's extraordinary acting skills. "Lee Byung Hun is a simple and joking person in everyday life, but when he acts, he transforms into a great actor that's hard to believe."
"His acting genius stems from a deep understanding of the ordinary side of humanity. His humility and simplicity give the characters he plays a special uniqueness, which I call 'specialness in simplicity,'" Park said.
Lee Byung Hun expressed his gratitude to Park Chan Wook and the TIFF committee. "I am very proud to be a part of TIFF's 50th anniversary celebration. This is my fifth time attending this festival, and being a small part of this prestigious event is truly an honor," he said.
He also reflected on his career journey, saying, "Thirty-five years ago, I started acting in television dramas, but my passion has always been film. In 2000, through Park Chan Wook's film Joint Security Area (JSA), I finally realized my dream of starring in a successful feature film."
Lee Byung Hun also introduced his latest project with Park Chan Wook, "No Other Choice," which will premiere in Asia as the opening film of the 30th Busan International Film Festival.
"This film is a story I heard 15 years ago, and now it's finally coming to life on the big screen. I believe it's a must-see story," he said. He hopes to continue producing works that audiences can't help but watch.
Closing his speech, Lee Byung Hun stated that this award was not just for him, but also a recognition of Korean cultural achievements on the world stage. "I accept this award with humility, as a proud expression of the growth of Korean culture globally," he added.
The film "No Other Choice" itself has captured global attention. It received a nine-minute standing ovation at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival and garnered praise from foreign media and critics.
In addition to being the opening film in Busan, the film was also invited to the Main Slate section of the 63rd New York Film Festival, fueling the enthusiasm of film fans both at home and abroad.
