Super Mario is set to return to the big screen. Following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released in 2023, the animated series is set to continue its story with a second film.

Universal Pictures announced that the official title for the next film is 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie'. Along with the announcement, the studio also released a teaser trailer for the public to watch. The sequel's release date was previously announced as April 3, 2026, with Universal Pictures as the distributor.

The return of the voice cast from the first film was also confirmed. Chris Pratt returns as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

No new cast members have been announced yet, but the studio confirmed that there will be additional characters and voice actors for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie , details of which will be shared at a later date. The released teaser doesn't reveal many details.

The trailer opens with a scene of Mario sleeping under a tree. The camera then follows a butterfly around the kingdom, then moves further into the sky, hinting at the galactic theme that befits the title.

The sequel's title is taken from Nintendo's popular game, Super Mario Galaxy, which was released in 2007 for the Wii console. This announcement also comes ahead of the 40th anniversary celebration of the original Super Mario Bros. game , which first launched on September 13, 1985.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, became one of the most commercially successful animated films. It ranked second on the list of highest-grossing films of the year, just behind Barbie, and was also the highest-grossing animated film of 2023.

This success also marked a stellar year for toy and video game companies like Mattel and Nintendo. With a production budget of $100 million, the film grossed $1.35 billion worldwide. However, the film wasn't entirely well-received by critics.

Out of 288 reviews, it only holds a 59% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Most critics called The Super Mario Bros. Movie a colorful animated adventure with a shallow story. It's fair to say the film has both strong and weak points.

However, audience opinion was quite different. Based on over 10,000 reviews, the film achieved an impressive 95% rating. On the other hand, the initial reaction to the decision to cast Chris Pratt in The Super Mario Bros. Movie was indeed met with criticism.

Many Nintendo fans were disappointed that Mario didn't use an Italian accent, unlike Charles Martinet's signature style that had become ingrained in the games. However, over time, audiences began to accept it.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie introduces us to Mario and Luigi, two brothers from Brooklyn who are trying to build their own plumbing business. Even though their family and those around them don't fully believe in their abilities, Mario and Luigi remain optimistic.

They believe that as long as they support each other, anything can be overcome. However, a plumbing incident nearly sinks Brooklyn, forcing them to descend into the underground sewers to fix the leak and prove themselves.

Instead of being successful, the two of them were dragged into the world of the Mushroom Kingdom and separated in the midst of the critical times that hit the strange land.
