Korean actor Jang Dong-ju has announced his retirement from acting after a 14-year career, following his starring role in the 2012 drama A Midsummer Night's Dream. Financial reasons are said to have influenced his decision.

He stated that the phone hacking incident caused losses, forced him to sell his house, and accumulated debts of tens of billions of Korean won. As speculation mounted, Jang Dong-ju added, "My phone contains material that should never be revealed to the public."
On May 15, 2026, four months after revealing the hacking incident, Jang Dong-ju announced his retirement. He said, "For many years, I lived as an actor and received incredible love and support.
Every moment of laughing and crying in front of the camera was the brightest moment of my life. Today, I am leaving my life as actor Jang Dong-ju. Even though I am leaving the stage, I will never forget the support of my fans," he concluded.
