South Korean actor Jo Byeong Gyu might be resuming activities with a new drama. On June 24, it was reported that the actor will star as the male lead of the upcoming drama “History of Losers” (literal title). In response to the report, his agency HB Entertainment commented, “It’s one of the projects that Jo Byeong Gyu has received an offer for. He is carefully reviewing [the offer] at the moment.”
“History of Losers” is based on the webtoon of the same name. Written by Kim Poong and drawn by Shim Yoon Su, it is a story about love and relationships that could turn anyone into a loser. It will be portrayed in the form of a romantic comedy that shows the inherent pathetic sides of people and diverse thrilling moments that come with various forms of love.
The hyperrealistic depiction of humans at their lowest will be accompanied by laughter and empathy that goes beyond discomfort. It was going to be turned into a movie in 2015, but the plans fell through, and it was made into a musical in 2017. Kim Poong will write the script, and director Kim Sung Hoon, who produced the films “Confidential Assignment” and “Rampant,” will direct it.
If Jo Byeong Gyu accepts the offer, he will play Seo Min Ki, a freshman in college who is majoring in Korean literature. He is a hesitant person with a lot on his mind who sometimes makes bold actions. Being a 20-year-old, the result of his actions are always a series of clumsiness and mistakes. However, because he’s someone who thinks a lot and has an ideological personality, he always self-reflects. He is a simple outsider whose only wish is to drink with his friends and play games at internet cafes.
Jo Byeong Gyu rose to stardom with his roles in the hit dramas “SKY Castle” and “The Uncanny Counter.” In February of this year, the actor was swept up in rumors of school violence. Someone claimed to have been bullied by Jo Byeong Gyu while they were at school in New Zealand together, but HB Entertainment denied the claims as well as further allegations made by other people. His agency announced legal action, and he personally addressed the allegations.
