K-Pop fans have a hate and love relationship with the entertainment agency where their K-Pop idol belongs. On the one hand, agencies help K-Pop idols achieve their dreams, and when they are successful the fans are grateful for it. However, not a few of the fans protested the way the agency works, which lacks in protecting, maintaining, and providing support to their artists.
Quoting from Koreaboo on Sunday August 28, 2022, SHINee's Key was a guest star on the latest episode of 'My Alcohol Diary' which was brought up by rapper Lee Young Ji. Like the previous episodes, the guests shared their honest opinions on various topics while enjoying drinks together. In this episode, Key teased Lee Young Ji about taking on his role as the MC of 'My Alcohol Diary' because Key himself is a variety show expert.
Not only that, the idol also expressed his true feelings about his relationship with SM Entertainment , the agency that overshadowed Key for many years. "If you are a man at least you will go to the military and I can take your role," Key said to Lee Young Ji. Lee Young Ji also replied to Key with a suspicious expression. "I know you're trying to take over my role today!"
Key then explained that he never knew what opportunities the agency would give him because he was only a worker under contract. "Because I am also a contract worker and you are also a contract worker, we never know what will happen in the future. I always think like that," said Key. Meanwhile, Lee Young Ji found it funny that a legendary idol like Key said he was just a contract worker.
"I've never seen someone introduce himself as a contract worker here," admitted Lee Young Ji. Key explained that he doesn't see SM Entertainment as a real family, which is unlike how many idols talk about their entertainment companies. "I am a contract worker. It would be a lie if I said that the company is a family," said Key. Of course Key clarified that his relationship with SM Entertainment is fine.
He even said that he loved the agency. However, the dynamics of their relationship are not like family, but rather helping each other. "We just help each other," said Key. Lee Young Ji also agreed with Key's statement. Key is known to be honest when he talks about his relationship with the company that houses him. On several occasions he also often said how SM Entertainment treated him.
