SM Entertainment has announced that Shotaro and Sungchan are no longer part of NCT. The two members who debuted in the NCT 2020 project will be prepared to become members of the new SM group which will debut in 2023. Some time ago a report from Sedaily stated that SM Entertainment was preparing to debut two groups in 2023.
Through the announcement they made on Twitter @NCTsmtown on Wednesday May 24, 2023 it was revealed that one of the groups is a boy band. This boy band will install Sungchan and Shotaro as its members. However, it was not disclosed whether the previously introduced SM Rookies members, namely Eunseok, Shohei, and Seunghan will also be part of this group or if they will debut as the final sub-unit of NCT.
SM already plans to close NCT's expansion by debuting a Japan/Tokyo sub-unit. For this sub-unit, SM also plans to introduce several new trainees from Japan. They will do this introduction in the near future. Based on the information that has been circulating, there is a possibility that the two groups that SM Entertainment will debut this year are the NCT Tokyo/Japan sub-unit and the new group for Sungchan and Shotaro.
One other group is a girlband. With Shotaro and Sungchan leaving NCT, SM planned for them to try a different genre of music from their previous groups. As is known, NCT has been known as a group that always performs experimental pop music and tries various genres. Sungchan and Shotaro's new appearance with different musical colors will certainly be a dish that fans have been waiting for.
To be sure, the future of NCT, Shotaro and Sungchan will still be long at SM Entertainment. Fans will also feel a lot of euphoria throughout this year, from the introduction of new NCT members to the debut of a new group from SM Entertainment after aespa. The following is SM Entertainment's official statement regarding the future of NCT, Sungchan, and Shotaro:
"This is SM Entertainment. First of all, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the fans who love and support NCT. Below is an announcement that will explain the future of Sungchan and Shotaro. As members of NCT, Sungchan and Shotaro have performed amazingly. However, they will close the chapter with NCT and debut in a new group in 2023.
We express our deepest apologies and also appreciate the fans who have supported and waited for them to debut as the new NCT group. After careful consideration and discussion with Sungchan and Shotaro in preparation for SM 3.0, we decided it would be best to consider the opinions of our artists and each group's artistic and musical direction.
We ask for your understanding and support for Sungchan and Shotaro who are about to start a new chapter in their careers. The new NCT group (coming soon) will be the final group of NCT's unlimited expansion, so we plan to launch one more group that will become a regional representative and identity.
Accordingly, we will increase the number of Japanese members (for NCT) and reveal new members who will debut and share the journey with fans. We will give full support not only to the NCT members but also Sungchan and Shotaro. We once again ask fans to continue to support and give unwavering love for their future. Thank You."
