Production of the film The Exorcist by Mike Flanagan is being accelerated after receiving a release schedule from Universal and Blumhouse. Originally, the films were planned as a trilogy by writer and director David Gordon Green.

However, due to unsatisfactory box office results and reviews, the plans were changed and Mike Flanagan was now appointed to write and direct the latest film. Quoting from Deadline on Thursday June 20, 2024, Universal and Blumhouse have set a release schedule for the film The Exorcist, directed by Mike Flanagan, in 2026.

To be precise, this film will be shown in cinemas on March 13 2026. This latest film is described as a new story in the world of The Exorcist and is not a continuation of The Exorcist: Believer in 2023. Currently, there is no further information about the plot and who will star in it.

" Mike's voice and vision are invaluable to horror fans , and we are very excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I was immediately attracted to Mike's new approach to the world of The Exorcist and can't wait to see the audience's reaction ," said Jason Blum, quoted from ComicBook.com.

David Robinson, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Creek said, " I am honored to work with Mike. I am confident that Mike's vision for this franchise will amaze audiences around the world, and I am very excited to work with him, Trevor, Jason and the entire Team Blumhouse. "

Universal and Blumhouse acquired the rights to The Exorcist franchise in 2021 in a $400 million distribution deal. Initially, the deal included plans to create a new film trilogy. At that time, it is possible that the second and third films in the series will be exclusive to Universal's Peacock streaming platform.

As previously reported regarding Mike Flanagan's involvement, this move allows Universal and Blumhouse to realize their previously agreed production plans for two additional films in The Exorcist franchise. This was done without being too influenced by the poor response and box office performance of the previous film Believer.
