The Uncharted 2 film is currently officially in the works, as confirmed by Sony Pictures executive Steven O'Dell. This film is a continuation of Uncharted which was adapted from the popular game made by Naughty Dog.
Adapting from Variety on Tuesday June 18, 2024, Steven O'Dell revealed that Uncharted 2 is one of the film projects they are currently developing. However, there is no definite news whether Tom Holland will return to play in this sequel or not.
The first film, which will be released in 2022, tells the story of the adventures of Nathan "Nate" Drake, a young thief who is invited by Victor Sullivan, an experienced treasure hunter, to look for Ferdinand Magellan's legendary treasure.
Tom Holland plays Nathan "Nate" Drake, while Mark Wahlberg plays Victor Sullivan. This film also stars Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Rudy Pankow. The film Uncharted was released in theaters in February 2022 and received mixed reviews from critics.
Although well acted, many felt that the film had not been able to catch up to the level of quality expected from the original, and was considered an underwhelming imitation compared to other action adventure films such as Indiana Jones .
Despite experiencing major delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Uncharted managed to achieve significant success at the box office with revenues reaching $407 million. This makes it one of the best-selling video game adaptations of all time.
This success is certainly a strong reason for Sony to immediately develop a sequel. When Uncharted hit theaters, there were some early leaks that a sequel might be in the works. Ruben Fleischer, the director, already has an idea for this sequel even though he hasn't revealed the details.
In 2023, producer Charles Roven stated that Sony was interested in exploring the possibility of an Uncharted sequel . Earlier this year, Mark Wahlberg also said that he was asked to start growing a mustache in preparation for returning to the role of Sully.
The return of Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg seems very necessary for this sequel. The ending of Uncharted suggests that Nate's brother, Sam, is still alive and in prison. Additionally, the character Gage is introduced who is looking for Nate's ring which is related to Sir Francis Drake.
