Yoo Ah In has been caught up in a drug abuse scandal since early 2023. After that, Yoo Ah In was investigated by the police and all his artist schedules were canceled. Initially, Yoo Ah In was only investigated for alleged propofol use, but the deeper the investigation, the more it was revealed that he had also consumed marijuana, ketamine, and midazolam. Proven to have consumed illegal drugs, Yoo Ah In was tried to receive a punishment commensurate with his actions.
Quoting Sport Seoul on Tuesday September 3, 2024, the Criminal Agreement Division 25-1 of the Seoul Central District Court held the first sentencing hearing for Yoo Ah In and his friend Choi, who were charged with violating the Narcotics Control Act (psychiatry). In the trial, it was stated that Yoo Ah In was sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 2 million won.
Meanwhile, his acquaintance, Mr. Choi, was sentenced to eight months in prison and two years of probation. Yoo Ah In was charged with routinely administering medical narcotics such as propofol, midazolam, remimazolam, and ketamine 181 times at 14 hospitals from September 2020 to March 2022 under the pretext of sedative anesthesia for cosmetic procedures.
There was also a charge of illegally prescribing sleeping pills in the name of another person 44 times from May 2021 to August the following year. The prosecutor said, " As a famous celebrity in Korea, the defendant used his financial power and professional advantage to defraud doctors and spent about 500 million won worth of money to buy illegal drugs for medical purposes by inhaling drugs from abroad ."
Yoo Ah In's lawyer admitted that he had used drugs, but he defended it by saying that it was to treat his depression, anxiety disorder, and insomnia. Until the sentencing, he denied the charges of forcing his friend to smoke marijuana and destroying evidence. At the end of the trial, Yoo Ah In said, " Through this incident, I had time to look back on my entire life.
Through this incident, I am strongly committed to living as a more mature and responsible person ," he said. " Whatever the outcome, I will repay the many people who care about me with a much healthier and more honest future and be able to contribute more to society, " he said. However, even though a sentence has been determined, there is still a possibility that Yoo Ah In or the prosecutor will appeal the decision of the first trial.
