Superman star David Corenswet is currently gearing up for his next film project. The news comes shortly after production wrapped on the Superman film last summer. Citing a report from Deadline on Friday October 18, 2024, David Corenswet is in negotiations to star in the film Mr. Irrelevant , produced by Skydance Sports.
The film tells the story of John Tuggle, a football player nicknamed Mr. Irrelevant after being the last pick in the 1983 NFL Draft. Reacher TV series creator Nick Santora is attached to write the script for the film, while Jonathan Levine will direct. Levine will also serve as producer alongside Gillian Bohrer through Megamix, while Santora will co-produce the film through Blackjack Films.
Mr. Irrelevant is described as an inspiring and touching true story about John Tuggle being drafted by the New York Giants, and his profound impact on the team and his teammates. Tuggle impressed on the field while playing for the Giants and was named Special Teams Player of the Year in 1983.
Unfortunately, his career was cut short the following year after he was diagnosed with cancer while attending Giants training camp. Tuggle died in 1986 at the very young age of 25. Before his popularity skyrocketed after being chosen to play Superman, David Corenswet had starred in a series of hit films, starting with Pearl, The Greatest Hits, and Twisters, as well as the TV series The Politician, We Own This City, and Lady in the Lake.
Superman will probably be the film most associated with David Corenswet's name, given the high level of public enthusiasm and expectations for this film. Superman is also the first film in the new DCU continuity being brought to life by James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, so there's a good chance David Corenswet will be playing Superman for the next few years in multiple projects. James Gunn serves as writer and director for the Superman film.
The film also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
