BLACKPINK's Jisoo is one of the main female players in the Korean drama produced by Coupang Play, titled Newtopia. Ahead of its release, the production team shared several still cuts as well as leaks of the role she will play.
The Korean drama Newtopia tells the story of Jae Yoon (Park Jung Min), who is serving his mandatory military service, and his girlfriend Young Joo (Jisoo), as they race through zombie-infested Seoul to find each other. In this drama, Jisoo plays Yeong Joo, a persistent girlfriend who will stop at nothing to find her lover, even in the face of a horde of zombies.
The newly released photos via Coupang Play's Instagram, @coupangplay, give a glimpse into Yeong Joo's vibrant campus life, where she shines as a goddess in the engineering department. In one image, she is surrounded by male classmates, including a man kneeling before her with a flower in his hand.
In contrast, other photos show her frightened and tearful, yet determined in the face of a zombie apocalypse. Gripping a golf club with determination, Yeong Joo's unwavering determination to navigate the chaos of Seoul to find Jae Yoon takes center stage.
Jisoo shared her enthusiasm for the role, saying, “I was drawn to Yeong Joo’s charms from the start, and I wanted to portray her as authentically as possible. I hope viewers can enjoy seeing her grow in various ways,” as quoted by Soompi on December 27, 2024.
Director Yoon Sung Hyun also praised Jisoo’s performance, saying, “Her unique and funny personality was 99 percent in line with the Yeong Joo I imagined in the script, and she brought the character to life beyond my expectations.”
Newtopia is Jisoo's comeback after starring in the Korean drama Snowdrop, which aired in 2021. In addition, this BLACKPINK member has also started to spread her wings to the big screen, through the film title Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint with a number of top South Korean actors and actresses.
