Captain America 4 sits atop the box office with a less than satisfactory second week of screenings. The Sam Wilson version of Captain America is said to have earned US$28.2 million in the North American domestic market according to Box Office Mojo data on Monday February 24, 2025.
That figure dropped 68 percent from its opening weekend last week, bringing the Marvel Cinematic Universe film's domestic tally to US$141.2 million. On the other hand, the film Captain America: Break New World has earned US$148.2 million in the international market, bringing the film's global revenue to US$289.4 million.
The revenue is still considered weak because the production budget of the film starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford reached US$181 million, not including promotion and marketing costs. However, the cost is cheaper than others.
According to Variety, this sharp decline is nothing new for comic book superhero films like Captain America. Ant-Man and the Wasp in 2023 even experienced a decline of up to 70 percent in its second week. "This is the new normal for Marvel movies," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore.
"It's important to note that these movies have the appeal, and Captain America: Brave New World has a chance to finish third at the box office." "However, the second weekend decline of 68 percent shows that the audience enthusiasm is lower than the public wants from Marvel," he continued.
Captain America Brave New World also received some sharp criticism from various reviews. 301 critics on Rotten Tomatoes as of Monday February 24, 2025 gave the film a score of 40 percent, although more than five thousand viewers still gave the film a score of 80.
Captain America: Brave New World is the latest release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe saga. It is part of Phase Five of The Multiverse Saga and the fourth Captain America film in the franchise. Brave New World is also Anthony Mackie's first film as a lead actor. He plays Sam Wilson who is the newest Captain America after previously being known as Falcon.
