Singer Lady Gaga made a shocking confession about her struggle with severe mental illness, namely psychosis. Lady Gaga honestly opened up about the dark story of her life that she had been hiding. She admitted that the condition affected her daily life, including when promoting her latest album, Mayhem.
"Five years ago, I had a psychosis. I was completely disconnected from reality for a while," Gaga said in an interview with The New York Times Podcast: The Interview. Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, revealed that the "Lady Gaga" image she created as a stage persona turned out to be a backfire.
On the one hand, the image brought her to the peak of world fame, but on the other hand, it left her feeling torn between her personal identity and her stage persona. "I had to find a way to fully integrate myself with my stage persona, and bring Gaga's 'lady boss' energy into my everyday life, but in an empowering way," said the Poker Face singer.
"I think I'm a nice person, but there's a fierce, tough, intense side that comes out when I perform. I had to learn how to hold both sides without them conflicting," she added. After recovering from a difficult mental condition, the Joker: Folie à Deux star also admitted that she is now calmer. Gaga said that she used to prefer chaos.
"I used to love chaos, just living life on edge, living on the edge all the time. Now, I'm proud to be a much more boring person," Gaga said. Lady Gaga first revealed in 2021 that she had suffered a psychotic break and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after being raped and impregnated by a music producer when she was 19.
Gaga credited her fiancé Michael Polansky with helping her get through the ordeal. "It was a really tough time, but it was really special when I met my partner. When I met Michael, I was in a better place, but I remember him saying, 'I know you can be happier than this.' It was really hard for me to hear him say that because I didn't want him to think that about me," she admitted.
"I hate feeling defined by it (psychosis). I'm ashamed of it. But I don't think we should be ashamed of going through times like that," the Edge of Glory singer said candidly. Through her confession, Gaga wants to give hope to anyone who is struggling with mental disorders. "I just want to say, things can get better. It happened to me, and I'm grateful for that," Gaga said.
