South Korean actor Gong Yoo has been in the spotlight for a defamation case involving him. A 48-year-old woman has been sentenced to prison after repeatedly spreading false accusations against the Korean drama star.
According to a Yonhap News report on Wednesday July 30, 2025, the woman was sentenced to six months in prison with two years of probation. She wrote hundreds of false comments and posts claiming to be a victim of surveillance, intimidation, hacking, and sexual harassment by Gong Yoo.
This case began with Gong Yoo's live broadcast in January 2020. During the live broadcast, the woman, identified as A, repeatedly wrote defamatory comments such as, "I was threatened from behind and there wasn't a day where I wasn't threatened" and "He tortured me to the point of neurosis."
The accusations didn't stop there. As of March 2021, this woman had posted 235 defamatory comments and posts about Gong Yoo on various online platforms. The investigation proved that Gong Yoo had no personal relationship with the woman.
The sexual assault allegations he spread were confirmed to be baseless. "The allegations made by A are completely baseless and moreover, he has repeatedly spread false information over a long period of time."
"Although the victim is a celebrity (Gong Yoo) who receives public attention, the fact that false information was continuously spread over a long period of time indicates malicious intent," the Daejeon District Court explained.
The court considered that the perpetrator had admitted his guilt and was willing to undergo hospital treatment. However, the scale of the crime and its impact on Gong Yoo's reputation dictate that the case remain pending legal proceedings.
Gong Yoo's agency, Management SOOP, released an official statement confirming Yonhap News' report. Management SOOP emphasized their full commitment to protecting Gong Yoo from any form of defamation. They further urged fans to help report malicious posts and comments to the agency.
"Hello, this is Management SOOP. Our agency has continued legal action against the rights violations experienced by our actor. One of these is the prison sentence for the perpetrator who routinely spread slander and false information against Gong Yoo, which has now been handed down.
The Daejeon District Court ruled that the perpetrator received a prison sentence of 6 months and 2 years of probation." "The aforementioned perpetrator repeatedly posted false facts and comments on social media, severely damaging our actor's reputation.
The court also recognized the malicious intent and seriousness of the crime and found the perpetrator guilty." "Furthermore, your reports and messages regarding malicious comments and posts are greatly appreciated for our action.
