South Korean singer PSY (Park Jae-sang) is being questioned by police on suspicion of violating the Medical Services Act. He is suspected of receiving a prescription for psychotropic medication without consulting a doctor.
Seoul Seodaemun Police said authorities are investigating PSY and the university hospital professor who reportedly issued the prescription. Under South Korean law, psychotropic medications can only be prescribed after direct consultation with a doctor. Patients are generally required to collect the medication themselves.
However, in certain circumstances, medication can be collected through an intermediary or by a close family member or caregiver. PSY reportedly took Xanax and Stilnox, commonly used to treat insomnia and anxiety disorders. These two drugs can be highly addictive and dependable.
Police suspect PSY has been receiving prescriptions for Xanax and Stilnox from a Seoul hospital since 2022, even though he has never attended a medical appointment. The medications were also collected by his manager, not PSY. Meanwhile, P Nation, PSY's agency, admitted that they could not deny the news.
"It cannot be denied that a third party took out a prescription for sleeping pills in his name," the agency continued. P Nation stated that PSY had long suffered from chronic sleep disorders and had been taking prescribed sleeping pills.
The agency stated that PSY had also followed the prescribed medication and dosage guidelines. "There have been several cases where sleeping pills were collected by third parties, and the police are currently investigating," they continued.
