Lee Jung Jae made history as the first Korean actor to receive the Charlie Chaplin Award, a prestigious award from Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) in New York, United States.
This announcement was made by his agency, Artist Company, after the Charlie Chaplin Award Asia event which took place in Singapore on October 3, 2025. The Charlie Chaplin Award was first established in 1972 by the FLC to commemorate legendary actor Charlie Chaplin's return to the United States after his exile.
Since then, the award has been given to figures who have made significant contributions to the world of international cinema. The Asian category itself was only introduced in 2018, with previous recipients dominated by Chinese filmmakers such as director Zhang Yimou and actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai.
In his speech, Lee Jung Jae expressed both an honor and a sense of burden to receive the award named after Charlie Chaplin. "I feel nervous and burdened by the significance of this award. As part of the Asian film community, I will strive to make a positive impact," he said.
Lee Jung Jae rose to global fame through his role in the Netflix series 'Squid Game,' which was a huge success worldwide. For his performance, he won the Best Lead Actor award at the 74th Emmy Awards in 2022. In 2024, he also appeared in the series 'The Acolyte', a Star Wars spin-off that aired on Disney+.
