BTS member Min Yoon Gi, better known as Suga, has just revealed a surprising fact about the origin of his stage name which has been kept tightly. In an interactive question and answer session with Wired, he admitted that the narrative that has been circulating among fans about the meaning of his name is not the real story.
For years, the public believed that Suga's name was an abbreviation of shooting guard, referring to his favorite position when playing basketball. However, the 33-year-old explained that his main inspiration actually came from the martial arts arena, especially from UFC fighter Sean O'Malley and legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard.
"I can finally explain this now. There is a legendary boxer named Sugar Ray Leonard. So, people who have the ability to attack technically proficient, specialists, are called 'Suga'," he said. Suga added that HYBE founder Bang Si Hyuk, who is a big fan of boxing, was the one who proposed the name.
According to him, Bang saw the similarities between Suga's precise rap technique and the technical ability of a world-class boxer. "Because your rap is very technical, you have to use the name Suga," Suga recalled imitating the producer's words.
Interestingly, the reason SUGA has used the "basketball" narrative all this time is because he feels that the explanation of the history of boxing is too tiring to be told over and over again. This confession then made the other BTS members stunned.
j-hope openly admitted that he was surprised to find out the fact after so long. "This is the first time I've heard this story," j-hope said. This surprise came amid BTS's big momentum which had just released a full album titled "Arirang" last month.
The album successfully dominated the global market by occupying the first position on the Billboard 200 for two consecutive weeks. In addition to discussing stage names, BTS also shared stories about their reunion after military service and preparations for the stadium world tour which will begin soon.
