David Beckham appears to be enjoying his new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the iconic landmark for Hollywood entertainment figures. The day after the unveiling, the former England captain returned to pose for a photo next to his own name.
Citing a report from The Mirror quoted on Monday, June 15, 2026, Beckham uploaded the photo to Instagram Stories with the caption, "had to check if it was still there." The moment seemed lighthearted. Beckham was clearly proud.
However, on social media, some fans were busy questioning why the English footballer was receiving a star on the Walk of Fame. The Walk of Fame has traditionally been associated with entertainment figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Madonna, and Elvis Presley.
Several sports figures have also received stars, including Muhammad Ali, Billie Jean King, and Shaquille O'Neal. However, they were all from the United States. Several fan comments quoted by The Mirror questioned the decision.
Some argued that giving Beckham a star further diluted the meaning of the Walk of Fame. Others cynically asked what film roles Beckham had played. This doubt has been fueled by the fact that the Walk of Fame process isn't just about popularity.
According to the Hollywood Walk of Fame website, inductees can nominate themselves or be nominated by others. The application fee is US$275. If selected, there's a $85,000 sponsorship fee.
The funds are used to create and install the star, host the dedication ceremony, and maintain the Walk of Fame area. Some big Hollywood actors like Al Pacino, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brad Pitt haven't even had a star.
Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian was reportedly rejected by the committee. Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez, as quoted by The Mirror, explained that Beckham was inducted in the Sports Entertainment category.
According to Martinez, Beckham played a significant role in boosting the popularity of soccer in the United States. “Beckham’s role in raising the profile of soccer in America and his long-term influence on global sports, entertainment and culture makes this award especially meaningful,” said Ana Martinez.
Beckham is also considered to have entered the entertainment sector because he founded Studio 99. The production house has made a number of documentaries, including the Beckham series on Netflix.
Beckham was present at the ceremony, along with his family and best friend, Tom Cruise. He delivered an emotional speech. “I’ve always been a dreamer, but I never imagined an award like this would be given to a British footballer from a working-class family like mine,” said Beckham.
He also hopes that one day his grandchildren will be taken to that place and told about a child who dared to dream big. However, his eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, was not present. The Mirror reported that Brooklyn is experiencing a rift with his family.
