Jang Dong Ju has strongly denied allegations that he skipped out on a bar bill. Speaking to OSEN on June 25, 2026, Jang stated that reports surrounding the incident were “different from the truth.”
The controversy began after Jang visited a nightlife venue in Seoul’s Banpo-dong area on the night of May 14, 2026. According to reports, he told staff that a friend would soon arrive and pay the bill.
However, when the friend failed to appear by the early hours of May 15, 2026, the establishment contacted the police. The incident later sparked speculation that Jang’s retirement announcement may have been linked to financial difficulties and the unpaid bill.
Jang explained that he had gone to meet a friend who had offered to help him manage his debts and discuss his financial situation. According to the actor, the friend told him to start drinking and promised to pay upon arrival.
However, the friend had already been drinking elsewhere and became too intoxicated to make it. “The establishment asked me to pay the bill after waiting for some time,” Jang said.
“I told them I would make the payment the next day, but they called the police. The officers explained that as long as I paid within a few days, there wouldn’t be a major issue, so I was allowed to go home.”
Jang further claimed that he had already promised to settle the bill by the agreed deadline, but media reports describing the incident as a “dine-and-dash” surfaced before that deadline had passed.
“I clearly stated that I would pay,” he said. “But news reports came out before I had the chance to do so.” The actor confirmed that he has since paid the bill in full and that police informed him the matter would be closed.
“Leaving without paying is a crime, but I paid the bill in full as promised,” Jang said. “But regardless of the truth, the media has already portrayed me as an actor drowning in debt who went to a bar and skipped out on the bill.”
Jang also revealed that he is preparing legal action against those responsible for spreading what he claims are false and defamatory reports. According to the actor, his legal team is reviewing possible claims related to defamation and the disclosure of private information.
