Keller Dover's (Hugh Jackman) Thanksgiving celebration with the cheerful Franklin Birch ( Terence Howard ) turns tense when two little girls, Anna Dover (Erin Gerasimovich) and Joy Birch ( Kyla Drew Simmons ), are daughters of each of the families. was lost and could not be found even though their family had searched the neighborhood around the housing estate.
Ralph Dover (Dylan Minnette), the son of the Dover family, remembers that previously Joy and Anna approached an RV parked on the street while they were playing outside. Keller also reported the disappearance of Joy and Anna to the police. A detective named Loki ( Jake Gyllenhaal ) finds the RV and finds someone inside.
The RV was running unsteadily and stopped when it hit a tree trunk. Police found the man inside and took him for questioning. The man known as Alex Jones ( Paul Dano) turns out to be an adult male with the mental equivalent of a ten-year-old boy. This raises doubts that Alex will be able to carry out the kidnapping of the two little girls. Moreover, the results of the examination of the RV car also did not find any incriminating evidence.
Alex Jones was released and this angered Keller Dover. Keller waits for Alex in front of his house at night and takes him to an abandoned building to force him to say where the two girls are. Keller is still convinced that Alex knows something and plans to beat Alex up. Franklin Birch, whom Keller took to the old building and saw Alex, disapproved of Keller's actions and said it was wrong.
But Keller persists in insisting that Alex tell where Joy and Anna are. However, even though he was beaten to a pulp, Alex Jones still didn't say anything. Meanwhile, Detective Loki is still investigating the case and while finding out about the owner of the house where the RV is parked, Detective Loki gets information about another kidnapping that took place in the past, twenty-six years to be exact.
