BIGHIT MUSIC has announced plans for BTS personnel to fulfill military service. Starting from Jin as the oldest personnel. He will be enlisting in the military after completing promotions for The Astronaut. Meanwhile, other BTS personnel enlisted in military service according to their respective plans.
According to the agency, the seven new members will resume group activities in 2025. Following the news of BTS personnel conscription, there were concerns that South Korea would lose revenue of 5 trillion won (around Rp. 54 trillion) per year. The worldwide Kpop group does contribute large revenues to the country.
It's no wonder that BTS had the privilege of delaying military service. But BTS's Jin breaks this privilege because he wants to fulfill the duties of the state like other South Korean men. He canceled his mandatory military service suspension and will later join the army as an active duty soldier.
As noted in the Hyundai Economic Research Institute report in 2018, BTS contributes 5.1 trillion won per year. The same report stated that every one in thirteen tourists visited South Korea because of BTS in 2017. Bangtan Boys also contributed 1.58 trillion won in revenue for exports and consumer goods such as cosmetics.
Now Korean netizens are busy talking about the Fortune Magazine report which says, the BTS military conscription plan makes South Korea lose the opportunity to get 5 trillion won per year. Because the government seems to prioritize the economy rather than national defense. While BTS personnel reap praise for choosing to fulfill state duties.
"No matter how much money is lost, duty is duty. There are rules for everything, and the moment you start making allowances and exceptions, that's when the standards collapse. I've never seen a celebrity try to get out of military service and have such a career." well in our country.
They are forever branded with shame for their duty. If you consider the long term, BTS made the right choice in the end," commented one netizen on an online forum. "That doesn't mean that the responsibility for compulsory military service should be handed over to other young men," wrote another netizen.
