South Korean media outlet Newsis accused BTS' J-Hope of receiving preferential treatment on his military enlistment day. On Tuesday April 18, 2023, J-Hope enlisted at the 36th Infantry Division recruit training center in the city of Wonju.
On Friday, April 21, 2023 Newsis reported that all recruits who registered that day were only allowed to enter in one car each, as clearly stated on the large LED sign above the entrance. Additionally, recruits' cars are only allowed to enter the guarded area after showing the guard their registration notice.
But according to the Newsis report, six HYBE vans were seen entering the guarded area, with five entering at once and one following entering, suggesting that an exception may have been made for J-Hope regarding both rules. On the same day, HYBE responded to the report by stating, “We are currently checking [the veracity of the report].
” The agency added, "We will make a statement after checking." On the other hand, the Korean military has denied any preferential treatment. A military official stated that the one-vehicle notice was not an enforced rule, but that it was for safety purposes and that anyone could take more than one car if needed.
They said, "Single vehicle alerts are for safety control purposes, but no guidelines or regulations are enforced. Public soldiers may also enter with multiple vehicles in unavoidable circumstances." There is no limit to how many family members, friends, or conscript guests can enter.
