Netflix announced that the film 'Titanic' will return to broadcast starting July 1, 2023. The screening of the film by James Cameron has made the digital viewing service provider flood of criticism. Netflix's decision to re-air 'Titanic' is said to be insensitive to the recent tragedy.
As is known, five passengers on the OceanGate Titan were declared dead while on a tour of the wreck of the Titanic which sank in 1912. The submarine was reported missing on Sunday June 18, 2023 in the Atlantic Ocean, about 435 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada.
Then it was confirmed that it would explode on Thursday June 22, 2023. The rerun of 'Titanic' was considered too soon after the incident that killed the billionaires. Netflix is said to have crossed the line and used the tragedy to make a profit.
"People died in a tragic accident at the Titanic site and now using that moment to attract an audience is terrible," one Twitter user said. "Please tell me this is a joke, you must be joking, there's no way you don't have shame like this," commented another netizen.
"Capitalism is so evil because you know people have been searching for Titanic on Netflix all last week and they want to profit from it," another netizen wrote. Netflix denies deliberately showing 'Titanic' in the middle of the Titan submarine tragedy. Several sources who are netflix insiders stated that it was just a coincidence.
As quoted by Variety, they said that the running time of 'Titanic' on Netflix was a coincidence because the streamer's licensing deal had been completed long ago. If 'Titanic' premiered on Netflix on July 1, 2023, then it would have completed a licensing deal more than a few months before the incident occurred. In other words, long before the Titan submarine was lost.
