However, one day he was forcibly kidnapped and became a detective addicted to drugs. Looking back on his experience playing Jang Jae Kyung, Ji Sung admitted that he had difficulty with many aspects of the role.
"Because I have never played a drug addict detective before, it was not easy to play this character, and my imagination has limits," said Ji Sung as quoted by Soompi May 7, 2024. He continued, “So when I act, I feel like I hit a wall. But I try to pursue reality for some aspects of acting, while other aspects I leave to my imagination.”
Next, Ji Sung said that he was worried that his acting would be excessive and make viewers tired when following the storyline. "Unlike films, the storyline in a drama drags on, so I was worried whether the depiction of drug addiction would become tiring," said Ji Sung.
He added, “I try to approach the subject matter with caution. I also had a hard time deciding how far to go in describing the symptoms of addiction.” In addition, according to Lee Bo Young's husband, although drugs are an important part of case investigations in 'Connection', he also thinks that he should not depict them lightly or in an inappropriate way.
“Jang Jae Kyung believes that friendship doesn't exist, and when playing Jang Jae Kyung, I felt this was sad. I think he is a very lonely person," added Ji Sung. Regarding his preparations for this drama, Ji Sung revealed that he did a lot of research on drug addicts. He also maintains his weight to show a more realistic figure of a drug addict.
"There are many aspects in the drama that are difficult and burdensome to act, so I tried my best to find the right level of intensity in my acting," said Ji Sung. He continued, “In order to show a weak appearance, instead of exercising, I gave in to the pleasure of eating. During filming, I almost only ate nuts to keep my weight down.”
Lastly, Ji Sung described 'Connection' as a drama that has many strong and weighty elements, such as the bad friendship between classmates and a police officer who is addicted to drugs. 'Connection' will premiere on May 24, 2024, every Friday and Saturday at 22.00 KST.
