Deadpool & Wolverine achieved a new milestone by breaking a North American box office record in its first week of release. This film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise managed to achieve the highest-grossing opening weekend box office figures in history for an R-Rated or adult-rated film.
Quoted from Variety on Sunday July 28, 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine managed to pocket US$205 million or Rp3.3 trillion. The profit was obtained thanks to the film's screening in the North American region. This achievement also shifted Deadpool's achievement (2016) as the previous record holder with a total profit of US$132 million.
The film Deadpool 2 (2018) which was originally in second place also had to drop in rank with US$125 million. This achievement also became a new record throughout 2024. The opening weekend figures for Deadpool & Wolverine also beat Inside Out 2, which was previously the highest-grossing film in 2024.
The latest Deadpool film now sits at number 8 for the best debut of all time, overtaking Black Panther (2018) and just behind Jurassic World (2015) and The Avengers (2012). The third Deadpool film also ranked 9th in history after collecting box office figures of over US$200 million in its first week of release.
At the international box office, Deadpool & Wolverine also scored impressive results. The film became the only MCU film released in 2024, earning US$233.3 million internationally. The figure completes the total revenue of US$438 million in the global arena. With this, the Deadpool & Wolverine film managed to rank sixth in the highest-grossing films in 2024.
This achievement also exceeded the film's production costs, which were estimated to have cost US$200 million, with promotional costs of up to US$100 million. The film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, also helped the MCU become the first franchise to successfully gross a total of US$30 billion from global box office releases.
Deadpool & Wolverine is produced by Shawn Levy with a script by Ryan Reynolds along with Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells. They previously wrote for Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018). Deadpool & Wolverine is the only MCU film with an R-Rated rating after other releases were given a PG-13 rating.
