Ahead of the launch of the sequel to the film titled Twisters which will be showing in theaters this July, the original film Twister released in 1996 is back on streaming platforms to invite viewers to reminisce. Directed by Jan de Bont, Twister has become a cult classic over the years.

The disaster film stars Helen Hunt, winner of the 1998 Academy Award for Best Actress, as Dr. Jo Thornton-Harding. As a child, Jo witnessed her father being sucked to his death by a massive tornado from the family's basement. This dramatic scene became one of the most unforgettable moments in the film and is still remembered by many viewers to this day.

As an adult, Jo works as a scientist and is now a storm chaser, ready to risk his life to study the dark side of nature by carrying data-transmitting instruments directly into the path of deadly storms. Jo is determined to chase the biggest tornado ever to hit Oklahoma.

Amidst the dangerous stunts and her marriage on the brink of collapse, she also faces competition from other scientists who are trying to steal her breakthrough. The classic film Twister can be watched on the HBO GO streaming platform starting July 1, 2024.

Meanwhile, the film Twisters (2024) comes with a new story and is a stand-alone sequel. The sequel stars Glen Powell, Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, Anthony Ramos, and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and is expected to be one of the summer's big hits.

Experts are projecting that Twisters will have a solid opening weekend domestically, following in the footsteps of other successful films such as Inside Out 2 and A Quiet Place: Day One. On the other hand, Jan de Bont recently joined an interview with Comicbook where he reviewed his film history and commented on Lee Isaac Chung's upcoming film Twisters .

" I think it's a bit late. It should have been done 15 years ago, because at that time there was still an opportunity to combine visual effects and special effects. Nowadays, it's more about using visual effects alone, I think ," said Jan de Bont, quoted on Tuesday July 2, 2024.
