Mark Wahlberg is back with Apple after starring in The Family Plan. Apple Original Films has won the rights to produce the sports comedy-drama Weekend Warriors in a highly competitive deal. Citing a report from Deadline on Sunday August 25, 2024, the film Weekend Warriors was written and directed by Stephen Chbosky.
The project is currently in the early stages of development and will be produced by Plan B and The SpringHill Company, in partnership with Apple Studios. The story of this film is adapted from the German film Weekend Rebels which was inspired by a true story.
The German film released in 2023 tells the story of a father and his autistic son, who have a strong determination to watch all the teams in their favorite football league. In the American version, the story will be changed from football to basketball, in line with the involvement of LeBron James' The SpringHill Company.
This change is intended to make the film more suitable for American audiences. Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Chbosky became involved in the project after seeing the film's trailer screened at a WME talent meeting.
The film will be produced by Plan B's Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, as well as SpringHill's Spencer Beighley, LeBron James, and Jamal Henderson. SpringHill co-founder Maverick Carter will executive produce alongside Michelle Wilens, and Wiedemann & Berg Film, which produced the original film in Germany, will also be producing the film.
Weekend Warriors marks the second collaboration between Wahlberg and Apple Original Films following the success of The Family Plan , which became the most popular film on Apple TV+. Previously, Wahlberg starred in the action comedy The Union which immediately entered the global Top 10 chart on Netflix within 2 days of its release.
On the other hand, the actor born in June 1971 is preparing a number of other projects, namely the thriller Flight Risk from Lionsgate and the film Play Dirty from Amazon MGM Studios. He is also in the process of filming the comedy Balls Up by Peter Farrelly for Amazon MGM and Skydance.
