BLACKPINK's Jennie has once again expressed her position regarding the indoor smoking controversy through an interview with Harper's Bazaar published on Thursday September 19, 2024.
When asked why she officially apologized for the indoor smoking controversy, Jennie stated, "What can I do? If Koreans think it's wrong, I have to make up for it." She added, "I understand why you're angry. It's a cultural issue, it's a historical issue. It's a time issue. And I can't fight time."
Previously, Jennie was involved in a controversy over smoking indoors through a YouTube vlog released on July 2, 2024. She visited Italy to attend a fashion show for a fashion brand, and was seen smoking a vape cigarette while styling her hair and makeup right before the runway.
As criticism emerged in Korea, Jennie's agency, OA Entertainment, issued a statement, saying, "We sincerely apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable with Jennie's behavior." They continued, "Jennie also reflected on smoking indoors and the harm it caused to other staff members. She also contacted the staff who were there at the time and apologized directly."
However, fans overseas have begun to voice their objections as to why Jennie should make an official apology. Foreign media such as the BBC also reported, "Korean celebrities are used to this kind of close scrutiny. Jennie is not the first Korean celebrity to be criticized for smoking."
