On the evening of August 21, 2024, the Twitter account of the MTV Video Music Awards (MTV VMAs) announced the official performing artists of this year's awards ceremony, including Benson Boone, Halsey, Lenny Kravitz and Blackpink's Lisa. K-pop star Lisa is the only Asian artist on the list of Performers, along with three American artists.
This is Lisa's second time returning to the MTV VMAs stage. In 2022, the entire Blackpink group landed on this awards show with a performance of "Pink Venom". MTV VMAs organizers emphasized that "this is Lisa's first stage at the VMAs as a solo artist". Lisa made history when she became the first K-pop solo artist to win the “Best Kpop” award (for her solo song “Lalisa”) at the 2022 MTV VMAs.
This achievement also helped Lisa set a Guinness World Record. This year, Lisa is the K-pop artist nominated for the most VMAs. She won 4 different nominations for her solo hit "Rockstar", which was released nearly 2 months ago, including: Best Choreography, Best Art Direction, Best Editing and Best K-pop Song.
Lisa is making great strides in her career after leaving YG Entertainment. Lisa's song "Rockstar" released at the end of June set a series of impressive records. Lisa's next solo release, " New Woman " (featuring RosalÃa), released on August 16, 2024, became the biggest debut by a female K-pop solo artist on Spotify globally with 6 million streams, surpassing her own previous record with her hit "Rockstar" (5.89 million streams on the first day).
Lisa is also the female Kpop solo artist with the biggest debut on the US Spotify chart (reaching 544k streams), beating "Hard to love" by fellow Blackpink member - Rosé (518k streams) to set a new record. The MTV Video Music Awards is one of the four biggest music awards in the US. This year's awards ceremony will be held at the UBS Arena, New York and broadcast live at 8pm on September 10, 2024 (Eastern time).
