Senior British actress, Maggie Smith, or better known as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter film series, reportedly died at the age of 89 on Friday September 27, 2024. As reported by Reuters, the news of the actress' death was announced directly by her family.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital this morning on Friday 27 September," Maggie Smith's two sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, said, as reported by the BBC. "A very private person, she was surrounded by friends and family at the end of her life.
She leaves behind two loving sons and five grandchildren who are deeply saddened by the loss of their wonderful mother and grandmother," they added. "We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their continued care and kindness during his final days," the children continued.
Closing the announcement, the two also expressed their gratitude for the messages and support from the public, and asked for privacy for the grieving condition they were facing. Maggie Smith or Dame Margaret Natalie Smith was born on December 28, 1934 in Ilford, Essex. She first entered the film industry in 1952 and has successfully survived through her acting talent in various film and theater genres.
Maggie Smith won two Oscars for Best Actress in 1969 and Best Supporting Actress in 1986. She also won five BAFTA awards, four Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award. The actress has starred in several hit films, and some of her characters have stuck with her, especially the character of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter film series.
Throughout the legendary film saga, Professor Minerva McGonagall is the head of Gryffindor house who also teaches Transfiguration class, or the ability of wizards to change form from human to animal or object. McGonagall's character is known as a firm and fearless teacher, she even became one of the trusted people of the Hogwarts headmaster, Professor Albus Dumbledore.
