Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth) is an American Special Forces captain on leave to move in with his wife and daughter. However, after watching the 9/11 attacks on TV, Captain Nelson rushed to the local Army base. Captain Nelson decided to go ahead and take on the mission with his unit, ODA Team 595.
After experiencing emotional conflicts with their respective families and a bit of bureaucracy with some parties, the 12-member team lands in Afghanistan, where they ally with local Northern Alliance forces led by General Dostum, to retake Mazar-i-Sharif from the Taliban.
However, because General Dostum has a different way of doing things than the American military, Captain Nelson's journey with his members in Afghanistan does not go as smoothly as expected.
In unfamiliar geographical and cultural conditions, Nelson's team faced enormous challenges: in addition to the much larger enemy numbers and differences in military strategy, they also had to adapt to the local way of fighting, namely on horseback in mountainous terrain.
