South Korean actor Lee Byung Hun has made history, becoming the first Korean actor to receive a Special Tribute Award from the Toronto International Film Festival, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The honor was presented at the festival’s annual TIFF Tribute Awards gala on September 7, 2025. On Tuesday September 9, 2025, Lee shared his acceptance speech on social media, reflecting on his remarkable 35-year career.

Lee Byung Hun began by congratulating the Toronto International Film Festival on its 50th anniversary. He reflected on his 35-year acting career, noting that although he started in TV dramas, he always carried a love for cinema.

He credited his role in director Park Chan-wook’s 2000 film Joint Security Area as the moment he was finally able to fulfill his dream of becoming a successful film actor.

Lee Byung-hun noted the powerful full-circle moment of being back at TIFF with the same director for their new film, No Other Choice. He revealed that a story Director Park had first told him 15 years ago has finally been made into a film, calling it a “must-see.”

He concluded his speech by dedicating the honor to his home country, stating his belief that the award is a recognition of the incredible achievements and growth of Korean culture.
