BTS's RM has once again captured public attention with his deep thoughts about his personal life. In a live broadcast on Weverse on October 5, 20225, RM discussed sensitive topics such as marriage, loneliness, and social pressures that many people, especially women, experience.
The idol, born in 1994, started by revealing his age, which is now 32 years old. "If I meet the right person at the right time, maybe I'll get married. But if not, I might just live alone like this," he said. RM emphasized that he believes there is no right or wrong answer regarding marriage.
“I don’t think there’s a definitive answer to this,” RM said honestly. The BTS leader then touched on current social realities. He stated that many people feel pressured to marry, even though the decision should be a personal one and not forced by social norms.
The idol specifically highlighted the pressures women feel. “I think women are under more pressure from society and the media about getting married and having children,” he said. According to RM, everyone should be able to live according to their own rhythm and pace.
“I just wish everyone could live life their own way,” he added. RM also questioned the notion that marriage could be a solution to loneliness. “If we can’t be comfortable alone, will marriage really solve that problem?” he asked reflectively.
RM explained that there are times when someone who is married actually wants to feel alone again. "People change. They might want to be alone again," he said. The 32-year-old idol believes that someone who can be comfortable alone is likely to be comfortable with other people and vice versa.
Regarding the reasons for getting married, RM expressed his views honestly. "If you get married just to escape loneliness, that's not the right reason," he stressed. The BTS leader also has doubts about having children. "Honestly, I'm still having trouble taking care of myself. Nurturing a new life isn't as easy as it seems," he said.
RM reminisced about his childhood and admitted that he had overwhelmed his parents. "If a child like me was born from me too... Gosh, I might stress myself out," he joked with a small laugh. Even so, he still admits that children are something full of love.
“Of course, children will still be loved, but still… there is no definite answer,” he said. RM also discussed the differences in perspectives between married and single people. He believes that both sides can only understand each other's perspectives, and no one can truly understand the other person's position.
RM said that his generation, born in the 1990s, was the first generation in Korea to start seeing marriage as a choice, not an obligation. "For those of us born in the 90s, marriage began to be seen as an option, not a necessity.
Therefore, everyone has the right to make their own choices," said RM. RM also mentioned his naughty past, and felt that now he had to make up for it. "I used to cause my parents a lot of trouble. That's why I'm a very dutiful child now. It's kind of karma," he said with a smile.
Closing the discussion, RM said that nothing is truly absolute in life. "Marriage, hobbies, traveling —there's no definitive answer to all of these. But if there's one thing that comes closest to 'always good,' it's probably reading books and exercising. Because those two things never lie," RM said.
