Several Korean actors have recently been caught up in tax evasion cases. Following Cha Eun Woo, Lee Min Ki, and Kim Seon Ho, Ji Chang Wook is now reportedly undergoing a tax audit. Ji Chang Wook is currently busy promoting his latest film, Colony, alongside Jun Ji Hyun and Koo Kyo Hwan.
He recently traveled to the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of the zombie-themed film. Unexpectedly, Ji Chang Wook was reported to have evaded taxes on his income. According to reports circulating on Tuesday (June 2, 2026), he was required to pay tens of billions of won in additional taxes.
The National Tax Service initially conducted a surprise audit at Ji Chang Wook's agency, Spring Company, last March. The audit, conducted over several weeks, revealed signs of tax evasion during the verification process.
Despite reportedly taking into account expenses for entertainment activities, the National Tax Service classified the tax as personal expenses, which is not legally valid and therefore imposes additional taxes on Ji Chang Wook.
Korean netizens immediately expressed their disappointment after hearing the report. However, a representative from Ji Chang Wook's agency denied the actor's accusations of tax evasion and fraud. For your information, the actor founded the agency Spring Company with his long-time manager Bang Chi Goo in 2023.
The agency was formed after his exclusive contract with Glorious Entertainment ended. Through an official statement released on Tuesday (June 2, 2026), Spring Company apologized if the news about Ji Chang Wook caused concern for netizens.
Spring Company also asserted that there were "differences in the interpretation and application of tax law" with the National Tax Service, specifically regarding "entertainment activity income" attributed to "individuals or agencies."
"Ji Chang Wook has always prioritized tax compliance earnestly, strictly adhering to the law and relevant procedures without any issues since his debut in 2008. Therefore, we respect the results of the National Tax Service's investigation and will promptly pay the tax arrears imposed in accordance with relevant procedures."
"We will be more thorough in examining our tax management and accounting systems to prevent similar incidents in the future, continuing to fulfill our tax obligations in accordance with applicable laws and principles," concluded Ji Chang Wook's agency representative.
