Kwak Dong Yeon announced his military enlistment plans amid the popularity of the Netflix Korean drama The East Palace. The South Korean actor recently captivated netizens with his charisma as the Crown Prince.
The news was officially announced by Kwak Dong Yeon's agency, THEBLACKLABEL, on Tuesday (July 21, 2026). He is preparing to carry out his duties as an active duty soldier in the Army. "The actor will earnestly fulfill his national duty through military service," his agency said in a statement.
Kwak Dong Yeon is scheduled to depart on August 25, 2026. He will then begin three months of basic military training before serving as an active duty soldier. He will be discharged in February 2028.
Furthermore, THEBLACKLABEL confirmed that no special ceremony was held when Kwak Dong Yeon entered the barracks. Due to his mandatory military service, Kwak Dong Yeon was also unable to participate in the second season of the variety show, The Village Barber.
The first season, which aired this year, followed three best friends, Park Bo Gum, Lee Sang Yi, and Kwak Dong Yeon, as they worked as barbers at a small rural barber shop. For this reason, Kwak Dong Yeon will be replaced by Go Kyung Pyo as the star of the latest season of the variety show The Village Barber.
However, Kwak Dong Yeon is expected to remain involved in filming the variety show alongside the cast of the Korean drama "Love in the Moonlight." The show will be a reunion for him with Park Bo Gum, Kim Yoo Jung, Jinyoung, and Chae Soo Bin to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the show.
