The story of old love blossoming again is often brought up in romance stories. Similarly, the outline of Dakota Johnson's latest film entitled Persuasion (2022). This film is an adaptation of the novel by Jane Austen, published in 1817. Jane Austen herself is an English novelist who has published many great works.
In Persuasion (2022), the main character is Anne Elliot (Dakota Johnson) who brings the narrative throughout the film. Eight years ago he fell in love with a sailor who did not yet have the title and influence named Frederick Wentworth ( Cosmo Jarvis). Unfortunately, his love had to run aground because of opposition from his father, Sir Walter Elliot (Richard E. Grant).
His father deemed Frederick Wentworth unfit to be part of the family. I can't believe it's been eight years. Anne hopes that time will heal her guilt and erase her love for Frederick Wentworth. But love is still love, if it is destined, it will always have a way to bring together partners at the right time and in the right place.
No matter how long time or distance separates, as Captain Harville (Edward Bluemel) puts it, "everyone destined to meet will meet." Frederick Wentworth who has become a captain comes back to Anne Elliot's life along with William Elliot (Henry Golding) who begins to shake Anne Elliot's feelings.
Where will Anne Elliot's love be this time? Persuasion (2022) by director Carrie Cracknell is set in England in the 1800s. Showcasing residential buildings in Bath that spoil the eye typical British at the time. Not only that, Persuasion (2022) also features a panoramic view of the beautiful Lyme beach.
When referring to that year, Persuasion (2022) also met the audience's expectations with the costume details displayed. Especially the one used by Dakota Johnson during the film. A long dress with muted colors and not excessive, shows the charm of Anne Elliot as a smart woman. The film with a duration of 109 minutes focuses on the perspective of the main character.
Dakota Johnson delivered the narration as if the audience could interact with the main character. This is an interesting point of this film. Unfortunately, the author is too focused on the narrative so that the love story that he wants to show is not optimal. This is also what makes Persuasion (2022) feel so slow and rambling.
Another aspect that is unfortunate is that the audience was made "excited" by the attitude of Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth who presented a "bearable" romance drama. Frederick Wentworth here doesn't really show his love and gives the impression that he no longer loves Anne Elliot.
There is no real action from Frederick Wentworth that makes the audience believe that his love still lasts after all this time. The storyteller doesn't seem to make his love drama passionate or end with a tragic heartbreak. Fortunately, the end of the story is made with a twist so that the audience can breathe a sigh of relief.
In addition to the two characters who irritated him, there were other characters who felt the portion of his appearance was quite disturbing. Apart from the unpleasant things from the film Persuasion (2022), this film is still worth watching. Especially for viewers who like drama and historical romance genres.
