After starring in the drama Youth of May, Lee Do Hyun will return to acting as a high school student who is good at math in the Melancholia series. He will compete acting with actress Im Soo Jung who plays a math teacher. This drama script was written by Kim Ji Woon who previously wrote the drama script Doctor John.
Meanwhile, director Melancholia is the person who also directed the drama True Beauty and Extraordinary You, Kim Sang Hyub. The sixteen year age difference between Do Hyun and Soo Jung makes the audience more curious about the chemistry between the two. Melancholia tells the story of Ji Yoon Soo (Im Soo Jung) a math teacher at Ahseong Middle School, a prestigious private school that is also a hotbed of corruption.
He is kind on the outside, but gets very tenacious and stubborn once he makes up his mind about something. Passionate about math, Yoon Soo is a teacher who encourages his students to find their own answers. At school, she meets Baek Seung Yoo ( Lee Do Hyun ), a troubled student who is at the bottom of the class.
He notices his potential in mathematics and with attention and interaction with him, Seung Yoo's grades rise and become number one in the class. Baek Seung Yoo himself is a student who rarely talks, but he likes to take pictures with his camera. He has no friends at school, but he has a shocking past. When he was a child, he won many math Olympiads.
When he was 10 years old, he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States, but he suddenly disappeared at the age of 12. Yoon Soo never knew that his attention and interaction with Seung Yoo would create rumors of a teacher-student sexual scandal among other students and parents which resulted in him being fired from his job.
Four years later, Yoon Soo and Seung Yoo meet again. Now both adults, they unite to uncover corruption at Ahseong High and to regain Yoon Soo's reputation as a teacher. Initially, Melancholia was scheduled to air on November 3rd, but the date was pushed back because one of the staff members had tested positive for COVID-19. Finally, the schedule was pushed back to November 10 on tvN.
