On August 28, 2022 local time, MTV's annual awards ceremony, the 2022 MTV Music Video Awards (VMAs) was held at the Prudential Center, Newark. Although some were unable to attend the event, there were six K-Pop groups that were nominated in various award categories at the VMAs, one of which was BLACKPINK .
However, unlike other groups that were unable to attend the VMAs, BLACKPINK attended and won two of the three awards they were nominated for, namely Best Metaverse Performance for BLACKPINK and Best K-Pop for Lisa. Apart from winning two awards, the group also took the internet by storm with their stage performance with the pre-release single ' Pink Venom .'
The group's appearance has also become a hot topic of conversation on social media and media outlets because of their outstanding dance and vocal skills. Launching Koreaboo , one of the prestigious media, Billboard, even praised BLACKPINK and put their iconic performance in the second best rank at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards after Nicki Minaj's appearance.
But unlike Billboard, it seems media outlet Variety doesn't think so. After the event ended, an article from the magazine listed the best and worst moments of the 2022 VMAs. Among the worst moments, Variety accused BLACKPINK of lip-syncing and considered their performance one of the worst moments of the night.
"The most glaring fault is the obvious lip-syncing. The repeat performers include artists like Blackpink, Anitta, and Flo Milli — who devote their attention to great dance routines but leave little room for singing which are actually." Since its release, the article has gone viral in Korea and has drawn the anger of fans and netizens.
They feel that the magazine's accusations are unreasonable and are only intended as hate comments for K-Pop. Here are comments from Korean fans and netizens. "They did sing live LOL." "Billboard said it (BLACKPINK's performance) was the second best ranking after Nicki Minaj." "What did they put in their ears to think it wasn't live?"
"Anyone could tell it was sung live, LOL. They (Variety) complimented everyone except BLACKPINK." "How can they say it's lip-sync when you can hear the smoke machine and their clothes rubbing against the microphone? A lot of people are performing to AR (All Recorded) tracks, and the fact that their vocals still stand out shows how great they are."
Variety and the New York Post are notorious for hating K-Pop. The New York Post also gave bad reviews of BTS's performances. It's not about BLACKPINK. They just don't like K-Pop, period. It doesn't matter because Billboard ranked their performance at number two. ." Those are a series of defenses for BLACKPINK from fans and netizens in Korea.
