The Recording Academy, the organization that organizes the Grammy Awards, has finally spoken out about the disappearance of BTS's performance video from their official website. The Grammys confirmed that the video's disappearance was not due to a BTS boycott.
BTS once performed "Butter" on the Grammy Awards stage in 2022. The video was uploaded by Grammy and posted to the awards show's official website after the event concluded. The video page for BTS's performance of Butter has now disappeared from the official Grammy website.
Fans noticed the video's disappearance following BTS's boycott of the Grammys last week. After several days of silence, the Grammys explained that the video was no longer accessible due to copyright issues. Their license for the performance had expired.
"BTS's old performances were removed from the Grammy website and YouTube several years ago as part of a routine licensing expiration," a Recording Academy representative told the Korea JoongAng Daily on Wednesday (August 5, 2026).
"This is standard practice for Grammy performances, as licensing terms vary and are typically limited to one year or less," they continued. Last week, the 7-member group that sang Dynamite declared that they would not submit their work for consideration as a 2027 Grammy nomination.
This united action by BTS was thought to be a criticism of the Grammys which compartmentalizes Asian music, distinguishing it from the main categories. "We have decided not to submit our work to the Grammys this year," wrote RM, Suga, V, Jungkook, j-hope, Jin, and Jimin.
"We want music to be heard and loved for what it is, rather than categorized by region or language," they continued. BTS's message is clear: they reject double standards in music.
This is especially true after the Grammys announced a new category for Best Asian Pop Music Performance last June 2026. The Recording Academy, the organization behind the Grammys, decided to create a new category specifically for Asian musicians, such as K-Pop, J-Pop, C-Pop, and others.
The internet was abuzz. Old X Grammy posts then surfaced. Two in particular caught the eye: Grammy's tweets from March 8, 2021, and April 6, 2022. Both are no longer accessible.
