Korean dramas can now be watched easily all over the world. Various OTT platforms seem to be competing to broadcast the latest dramas. However, Senator Jinggoy Estrada sees the screening of Korean dramas in the Philippines as a loss for Filipino actors and Television. The senator, who used to be an actor, said Filipino artists were starting to lose their jobs as local audiences voted in favor of Korean series and actors.
"Based on my observations, if we continue to broadcast Korean series, people will idolize Koreans while Filipino artists lose their jobs," Estrada said as quoted by CNN Philippines. "So sometimes I think about proposing a ban on this foreign series. Filipino artists who have acting talent are the ones we should support in our own country," he continued. This statement immediately drew condemnation from the Filipino public.
Many then criticized Jinggoy Estrada for not spending enough funds to support the Philippine entertainment industry. "He should set aside some funds for art in his own country so that the burden on producers and artists is reduced. Should see this as a big problem," said one netizen. "I think a better action than this ban is to give us support? If local artists can grow, we can be as big as Korea," added another.
Shortly after his remarks became the public spotlight, Jinggoy Estrada also gave a clarification. He admitted that he only wanted to provide support to the local entertainment industry. "My statement stems from frustration that we are overly excited about celebrating South Korea's entertainment industry while letting the country's own industry suffer because of the lack of public support for watching movies in theaters," explains Estrada.
"I hope that the community's enthusiasm in supporting foreign artists can also be carried out to support local talents who I believe are also world class. I have nothing against South Korea's success in the entertainment field, and indeed we have a lot to learn from them. South Korea's success stems from their love for countries, we should imitate them," he concluded.
