The Boyz's New drew criticism because they were considered to be less sincere in interacting with their fans. Reporting from KBIZoom on Monday July 10, 2023, boy group The Boyz recently held a video call event for fans who bought their second Japanese album entitled "Delicious".
Lucky fans were given the opportunity to have a 15 second video call with the members. During the video call event, New refused requests from Japanese fans. The fan asked New to show aegyo (cute behavior). However, New shook his head and resolutely rejected it.
Despite repeated requests from fans, New maintained his denial attitude until the end of the video call. The video of New's conversation with Japanese fans quickly spread through social media and various online communities. Netizens expressed disappointment at New's lack of effort in providing fan service to fans.
The predominant opinion is that he should have pleasant conversations with fans, and that he should comply with fans' requests while the requests are reasonable. Of course, it's not obligatory for K-Pop idols to show aegyo, as there are no rules about this. However, this is not the first time New has faced criticism for his attitude towards fans.
In an interview with a magazine in January last year, New was asked about the secret to The Boyz' growth. He replied, "I think 100% of that success is from our efforts. I'm not just saying it. We've put in a lot of effort." At that time, one of the members, Joo Hak Nyeon replied, "99% of our success is thanks to our fans. The remaining 1% is our efforts."
Later, New denied this and bluntly said that he had a slightly different opinion. New's honest answer annoyed the fans. Not only that, New also faced heavy criticism for his past behavior towards women on social media and appeared to ignore his fellow members during live broadcasts.
DC Gallery Inside The Boyz, which was furious with New's inappropriate behavior, issued a "Request for New's Exit from The Boyz" notice, criticizing it and saying, "Due to this issue, fans are prohibited from joining The Boyz fandom, and fans are left feeling disappointed and left.
Comments like 'misogynistic idol' were directed at unrelated members." In response, The Boyz's agency stated, "We will carefully check for criticism from fans, not just a one-time apology. We will look for ways to fill the gap and make improvements. We will pay full attention and do our best to ensure that such incidents don't happen again."
