The Korean drama ' The Atypical Family ', starring Jang Ki Yong and Chun Woo Hee is quite popular and has become a lot of conversation lately because of its interesting premise and storyline. The drama, which was released on May 4, 2024, tells the story of a family with superpowers who lose their abilities due to the problems of modern life.

Jang Ki Yong plays Bok Gwi Ju. He used to travel back in time and visit happy memories. But due to depression, he lost his strength. Her older sister in the series, Bok Dong Hee, played by Claudia Kim, has the ability to fly. But due to his obesity, he struggled to regain his strength.

Even though it is in great demand, several scenes of 'The Atypical Family' have not escaped criticism because the audience was disappointed by the fat shaming scene. In the first episode, Bok Dong Hee wears an unimpressive body suit as the family members try to use their abilities.

As the episode progresses, Bok Dong Hee takes leave from work after a button on her clothes falls off, causing the button to hit a potential client in the face. Plus, Dong Hee goes to a bakery to buy food, but her credit card is declined, and when things don't go her way, she starts stress eating. The audience then expressed their concern after seeing this.

The scene is considered a stereotype about obesity. Bok Dong Hee's way of eating is also said to be the result of stereotypes about fat people. Apart from the stereotyping problem, some viewers also didn't like the way the production team made Bok Dong Hee's obesity problem seem like a joke.

“ The drama looks fun, but they're still showing fat suits in 2024? Not cool at all and very frustrating to watch, ” wrote one netizen. " I thought it came from the character's bio, but the fat shaming in the first episode was really outrageous and made me uncomfortable, " said another netizen.

“ Why do they create bad roles just because they are big, I hate the way they write Dong Hee's character and her fat suit and makeup are not pleasing to the eye, ” another netizen chimed in. Meanwhile, 'The Atypical Family' airs every Saturday and Sunday at 22.30 KST. on JTBC and Netflix.
