In the midst of the conflict between HYBE and ADOR, recently Min Hee Jin, CEO of ADOR, was accused of plagiarizing concepts and songs for NewJeans. The accusations began with a post on the internet comparing NewJeans' similarities to the Mexican girl group from the 90s, Jeans.
Starting from the songs, concepts, choreography, costumes, hairstyles, to the album designs of the two groups, they were considered similar, causing a commotion. Quoting from KBIZoom on Thursday May 23, 2024, Paty Sirvent, a member of Jeans, expressed his opinion regarding the NewJeans plagiarism controversy.
Recently, Paty Sirvent shared a photo comparing Jeans and NewJeans on her social media account and wrote, “ Love it (me encanta) ”. She also shared a post accusing NewJeans of plagiarizing Jeans and added a caption, saying “ We are not wrong (No estábamos tan equivocados) ”.
Since last month, HYBE and ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin have been involved in a conflict. HYBE suspects Min Hee Jin is trying to take over ADOR's management rights, while Min Hee Jin claims that ILLIT, a new girl group under HYBE's other label, Belift Lab, is copying NewJeans.
In the midst of this dispute, netizens showed evidence that NewJeans plagiarized the Mexican girl group, Jeans. Many netizens feel this is ironic. When Min Hee Jin accused ILLIT of copying NewJeans, it turned out that NewJeans also had similarities with other groups.
Therefore, a heated debate regarding the accusation of NewJeans plagiarizing Jeans emerged in Korean online communities. Some netizens argue that NewJeans only took references from Jeans, not plagiarism. News about the accusation of plagiarism has also gone viral in Mexico.
As the situation escalated, NewJeans fans began leaving comments on the official social media accounts of Jeans and its members, asking the group to give their opinions. One netizen wrote in the comments, “ Please say something about this, NewJeans is being attacked for alleged plagiarism ”, which later received an official response from Jeans.
Replying to the comment, Jeans simply said, “ We're happy that the 90s are back and reaching a new generation ”, implying that they simply consider the similarities to be a 90s-inspired concept rather than plagiarism.
