Studio Ghibli has just received the Palme d'Or award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival which was held at the Grand Theater Lumiere, France on Monday May 20, 2024. The founder of the Japanese studio, Hayao Miyazaki, is known to be absent from attending this prestigious annual festival.
Therefore, the son named Goro Miyazaki appeared to represent his father when receiving the Palme d'Or award. "I want to thank the fans all over the world," said Goro Miyazaki, quoted from the Japan Times, on Tuesday May 21, 2024.
In his speech, he also discussed the success of Studio Ghibli's latest film, The Boy and the Heron, after winning the Best Animated Feature title at the 2024 Oscars. Goro even joked that the Palme d'Or trophy looked neater wrapped which made it easier to take home to Japan.
"When The Boy and the Heron won at the Oscars, Ghibli representatives came home with a statuette, but not in a box. They had to wrap it in a hotel towel to take home," he said. "I'm very happy to know that Palme wrapped this neatly," joked Goro.
The father then appeared in a short video thanking him for the award given to Studio Ghibli. Meanwhile, Studio Ghibli appears to be showing four new films that have never been shown outside Japan. The four short films include Mei and the Kittenbus, Looking for a Home, Mr. Dough and the Egg Princess, and Boro the Caterpillar.
This Palme d'Or award makes Studio Ghibli the first collective to receive this trophy at the Cannes Film Festival. Previously, this award was only given to individuals who were active in the world of film. The Palme d'Or award was also given to actress Meryl Streep and director George Lucas.
