On Sunday May 19, 2024 local time, K-pop fans were shocked by a video from the BBC showing a documentary about the Burning Sun scandal that occurred in 2019. In this documentary, the sex scandal that involved musician Jung Joon-young was revealed after he was imprisoned for five years for sex crimes, such as rape, recording sexual activity, and distributing it illegally.
This crime began to emerge after an anonymous person leaked a short message from Jung Joon-young. The source also provided the musician's cellphone data to SBS entertainment reporter, Kang Kyung-yoon. "In 2016, he (Jung Joon-young) left his cellphone in forensics for a police investigation.
Three years later, an anonymous person who had access to the information decided to leak it," wrote the BBC description. Joon-young's cellphone contained short message data on KakaoTalk between 2015 and 2016 which consisted of photos and videos of victims who were unconscious due to the influence of drugs.
The case grew bigger after a number of K-pop artists were involved, such as FT Island guitarist, Choi Jong-hoon. Apart from that, the contents of the group chat of the perpetrators also show the presence of Seungri, a former member of the boy group BIGBANG.
He was previously imprisoned for 18 months for gambling, prostitution and seven other charges. Together with Joon-young, Seungri was finally released on February 9, 2023. Meanwhile, it is known that the perpetrators raped women at the Burning Sun club located in the Gangnam area, Seoul.
They did it in a VIP Burning Sun room which was claimed to be soundproof. The BBC documentary also reveals the reasons behind K-pop artists who feel they are immune from punishment for the crimes they have committed. The BBC accused these artists of being protected by corrupt police who hold power in the institution.
Previously, the Burning Sun scandal was first heard by the public on January 28 2019 with a report containing an alleged attack on one of the visitors at Burning Sun. After carrying out a number of investigations, the police discovered that the nightclub was also a place for narcotics smuggling, bribery, corruption and prostitution.
