Toru Furuya, an anime voice actor with a career spanning more than 60 years, decided to leave the characters Sabo One Piece and Toru Amuro Detective Conan after being caught up in a romance scandal with a fan. Both Furuya and Toei Animation have issued official statements regarding this issue.
Adapting from CBR on Sunday June 23, 2024, Toru Furuya admitted to his four and a half year affair with a 30 year old fan. He also admitted and apologized for committing physical violence against the woman and forcing her to have an abortion. Before deleting his social media accounts, Toru Furuya announced publicly that he would be withdrawing from the One Piece and Detective Conan projects .
The message archived by the X @pewpiece account reads as follows. " With my selfish actions, I, Toru Furuya, have caused trouble and worry to many people. This incident has greatly damaged the work and image of the characters in "Detective Conan and One Piece.
"In order to repair the damage done to these works and characters, and to support the fans of these works, I have decided with great consideration and regret to step down from my role as the voice of the characters Amuro Tooru and Sabo ," Toru wrote. Furuya.
" Once again, I sincerely apologize to everyone for this significant problem. I truly regret this incident and feel very guilty ," he concluded. Meanwhile Toei Animation, the anime production company behind the One Piece anime , also released a statement regarding Toru Furuya's resignation as Sabo's voice actor.
" Toru Furuya's agency has requested that he no longer voice the character Sabo. We have accepted this request and decided to look for a new voice actor. We will continue to ask for your support for the One Piece anime in the future ," read Toei Animation's statement.
Before his cheating scandal was revealed, Toru Furuya was also known as the voice of Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru Chiba in the original Sailor Moon , Yamcha in Dragon Ball , and Amuro Ray in Mobile Suit Gundam . Many suspect that Furuya will retire from the Japanese anime voice acting industry after the controversy that entangled him.
