BTS's Taehyung's name became a hot topic on Sunday July 21, 2024 after he uploaded several photos on his Instagram account @thv. In his upload, Taehyung included a photo of McDonald's fries in a collage of photos of himself. The photo sparked disappointment among fans.
As a result of the upload, many fans asked the agency and Taehyung to delete the photo as a form of respect for ARMY (the name for BTS fans) who support Palestine. Taehyung is considered insensitive to the current geopolitical situation.
"My beloved V, Kim Taehyung , thank you so much for your Instagram update. But please, please, just delete it. Just delete it. You uploaded a very sensitive picture at this time. Educate yourself," wrote the account @sugab**** on X.
The account @rahm***** also wrote, "Kim Taehyung, please delete your post and show empathy for Palestine .Some of your fans are dying out there!!!" In addition to asking for the photo to be deleted, several fans expressed their disappointment with V. "You swear, you're the only reason I'm strong, but you've disappointed me like this.
Now who am I supposed to believe?... I'm really sick. How come? Is that true????" wrote the account @rauza******. Some of Taehyung's fans even cried because they didn't expect their idol to upload the photo. "I read it while crying and I felt angry, why did I have to post it? It's impossible for him not to know, right????" wrote the account @adeli******.
Previously, McDonalds was the target of boycotts in various countries because it was accused of supporting Israel. Following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, McDonald's franchise owner in Israel , Alonyal, announced that they would donate free meals to the Israeli military. McDonald's is a global chain, but its franchises are often locally owned and operated independently.
Management said that most McDonald's stores worldwide are run by local franchise operators who act as independent businesses in many ways, including setting wages and prices, and making statements or donations according to their own policies. This means that McDonald's US headquarters cannot dictate how each partner should respond in a crisis.
In January 2024, McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said the company was seeing serious impacts in some markets in the Middle East and some outside the region due to Israel's war against Hamas . In February, McDonald's reiterated that the conflict was likely to continue to weigh on its business.
