STAYC just made a comeback with their first studio album titled “ Metamorphic ” with the title song “ Cheeky Icy Thang ” on July 1, 2024. “Cheeky Icy Thang” is a synth-pop song with a funky shuffle rhythm that showcases STAYC’s cool yet hot and naughty charms.
This song shows a different image of the group. But unfortunately I don't think it's as good as when they performed "Teddy Bear" or "Bubble". This song only got 1 win on the weekly music program, unlike "Teddy Bear" which won 6 trophies and "Bubble" with 2 trophies.
The music video for "Cheeky Icy Thang" features a darker feel to support the lyrics that describe a bad girl impression. But the 'feel' of STAYC is still felt here. There are still many plays of color as they always do. In addition to the bad girl, the music video also shows many scenes that do not go smoothly.
Such as ice cream falling before being eaten and missing the car while taking a selfie. This section shows the relevance to real life. We also occasionally encounter things that are beyond our control and plans. But even if bad things happen, we must continue living.
This message is similar to the message in other STAYC songs, which is to always respond positively to things. Then in terms of the song, I don't really like the melody. Even though the concept they built is quite good through the music video. If I only listened to the song, maybe I wouldn't listen to "Cheeky Icy Thang" until the end.
However, this group has a highlight pose that caught my attention, which is when all the members line up and bend their knees at the end. This pose feels eye-catching to open or close a show. Ultimately, “Cheeky Icy Thang” may not be to the tastes of many who are used to STAYC’s cheerful and bright image.
But it doesn't mean that this song is bad because the rap and melody are like most typical youth songs that are currently popular. However, for groups that already have an identity, it is better to just use their usual characteristics.
