Netflix announces Squid Game 2 premiere date. The latest season of Netflix's phenomenal Korean drama will air on December 26, 2024. The same announcement also announced that Gi Hun's adventure story in Squid Game will end in season 3. This was conveyed directly by director Hwang Dong Hyuk in a letter released by Netflix on Thursday August 1, 2024.
In the letter titled 'The real game begins', Hwang Dong Hyuk expressed his feelings about the start of season 2 and the decision to end the Squid Game story in season 3. "I am so excited to write this letter to announce the premiere date of season 2 and to share the news that there will be a season 3, which will be the final season," he said.
Hwang Dong Hyuk, who serves not only as director but also writer and executive producer of Squid Game, is proud of the achievements of his work. "It's hard to believe I'm in the Squid Game world. It feels like a dream," he said.
Hwang Dong Hyuk is also excited to see the reactions of fans and viewers when the series airs in December. It was not explained further why Netflix and Hwang Dong Hyuk decided to end Squid Game in season 3. Usually, a very popular series is often made longer, such as Stranger Things which just ended in season 5.
Netflix seems to have a different threshold for South Korean series productions. Sweet Home, one of their original productions, also ended in season 3 (all seasons have aired so far). The gap between the airing of Squid Game season 1 and season 2 is quite long, around 3 years.
If Netflix follows the flow they did to Sweet Home 2 and 3, the airing of the last season of Squid Game probably won't be too far apart. "We will try our best to bring you thrilling entertainment again. I hope you are excited to see what will happen next. Thank you all very much and see you soon!" the director concluded.
