Weki Meki was confirmed to have disbanded after seven years of debut on August 8, 2017. The South Korean girl group officially disbanded in August 2024 after announcing the plan in June 2024. Fantagio as the agency also announced the departure of five Weki Meki members from the agency, including Elly, Lua, Sei, Rina, and Lucy.
Meanwhile, Ji Su-yeon, Kim Do-yeon, and Choi Yoo-jung are said to still be in discussions for contract extensions. "After a long and serious discussion with Weki Meki, who have received much love and support from fans for the past seven years, it has been decided that they will end their official group activities as of August 8, 2024," Fantagio said on its official website on Friday August 16, 2024.
"In addition, we are currently in serious discussions with members Ji Su-yeon, Choi Yoo-jung, and Kim Do-yeon so that the artists can come up with the best choices for themselves and after continuous discussions, Elly, Sei, Lua, Rina, and Lucy have decided to terminate their exclusive contracts," the agency continued.
In the same statement, they also expressed their gratitude to the five members who ended their contracts for being with Weki Meki until the end. "We ask that you send lots of love and support to Elly, Sei, Lua, Rina, and Lucy who will show you more of their activities and diverse sides."
Weki Meki debuted in 2017 under Fantagio. They were formed from the agency's program called Fantagio i-Teen which has been running since 2015. Weki Meki consists of eight talented women with Su-yeon as the group's leader. The girl group started their career with the release of the Extended Plays (EP) Weme on August 8, 2017.
The first EP consisted of six songs with I Don't Like Your Girlfriend as the title track or main single. Weki Meki returned in 2018 with the release of their second EP titled Lucky. They also released the single album Kiss, Kicks in October of the same year. In 2020, they released the EP Hide and Seek on June 18 and New Rules.
A year later, Weki Meki made a comeback with the EP I am me on November 18, 2021. The comeback also consisted of six songs with Siesta as the title track. Since then, Weki Meki's group activities have rarely returned for more than two years. Fantagio finally announced plans to disband with their last comeback through the release of the single CoinciDestiny.
